Overview

Ming Aralia (Polyscias fruticosa), also known as the 'Compacta' plant, is an evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia. This plant is valued for its unique, feathery foliage and attractive growth habit. It is often used as a houseplant or ornamental garden plant and is relatively easy to care for.

Plantation

  1. Choosing the right location: Ming Aralia prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. A north-facing or east-facing window is ideal.
  2. Soil requirements: Plant in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. A high-quality potting mix or loam-based compost is suitable.
  3. Pot selection: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. A pot that is slightly larger than the root ball will allow room for growth.
  4. Planting: Plant the Ming Aralia at the same depth it was in its previous container. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.

Growing

  1. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Reduce watering during winter months.
  2. Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C) during the day and around 60°F (15°C) at night. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
  3. Humidity: Maintain a humidity level of 50% or higher. Use a humidifier or place the plant on a tray of moist pebbles to maintain humidity.
  4. Fertilization: Fertilize every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Care

  1. Pruning: Prune regularly to maintain the desired shape and size. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves and trim leggy branches.
  2. Pest control: Inspect regularly for pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  3. Repotting: Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot and fresh potting mix.

Benefits

  1. Aesthetic appeal: Ming Aralia adds beauty and elegance to both indoor and outdoor spaces with its lush, feathery foliage.
  2. Air purification: This plant is known to improve air quality by removing pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene.
  3. Low maintenance: Ming Aralia is relatively easy to care for, making it an ideal choice for beginner gardeners and busy homeowners.
  4. Versatility: Ming Aralia can be grown in containers, making it suitable for small spaces such as balconies or patios.
